    • Top Rank heats up Isleta!

      Tuesday, April 24 2007

In the second of two boxing press conferences held today in Albuquerque, New Mexico (see below for the first), Top Rank and Prime Time Promotions officially announced a Telefutura-televised card for May 25 at Isleta Resort & Casino. What was termed a "long-term relationship" was announced between Isleta, Top Rank and the newly-formed Albuquerque promotion company, Prime Time Promotions. Four fights have already been planned for 2007, starting with the May 25 card headlining Mexico's Jesus Soto-Karass (16-3-2, 13 KOs) vs. Gilbert Venegas (10-4-2, 7 KOs) for the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title. At the presser, Albuquerque welterweight Ray Sanchez III (18-1, 14 KOs), who is fighting on the May 25 show, opponent TBA, officially called out Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., who, last year, after a fight in San Antonio, Texas, had named Sanchez as a possible future opponent. Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler confirmed the possible showdown, saying he'd like to put Sanchez and Chavez on a card together in the near future in hopes of building the fight for later in the year. The rest of the May 25 card, thus far, includes a co-main with Denver welter Mike Alvarado (16-0, 10 KOs) and a junior middle bout with Las Cruces hopeful Austin Trout (8-0, 8 KOs). Tickets for the card, starting at $15 to $100, are available at Tickets.com or by calling the Isleta box office at 1-8-777-ISLETA. More as this show develops . . . . -- Chris Cozzone
