Omar Chavez almost ready to turn pro
(3 posts)-
- Omar Chavez, 16, had what will possibly be his last amateur fight on Saturday at the Parque Revolucion in Culiacan. While Omar scored a second-round TKO over rival Oswaldo Cristerna, the Culiacan boxing commission was watching to determine whether he should be granted a professional boxing license. So it looks like we may see Omar turn pro earlier than expected. According to Rodolfo Chavez, his debut is likely to be after the World Cup.
Other fights on the card:
Martin Fing vs. Saul Lopez (draw)
Jesus "Vaquero" Meza -W- Raymundo Verdugo (decision)
Geovany Inzunza KO1 Guillermo "Gato" Gomez
Jesus Meza vs. Ricardo Garcia (draw)
Felipe Montiel -W- Geovanny L

How do you feel, Omar?
"Good, ready to fight Saturday. I'm already at weight; my fight will be at lightweight. I'm a little nervous because I want to leave a good impression with the fans. I'm not worried about my opponent because we've prepared well."
"I don't feel pressured because the fans are behind me. It looks like they'll fill the arena. My first desire in boxing is to win in my debut and, with time, to fight for a world title."
At sixteen years old, don't you think you'll be giving up an advantage fighting at 135 pounds?
"I don't know, but I can get down to featherweight or superfeatherweight; we'll see about that later. I'm 5'8 (7.3 meters)."
What does your father tell you?
"To do my best, that it's difficult, but that with discipline and dedication I can achieve my goals. My mom [Amalia Carrasco] tells me that whatever I like, go for it, although she doesn't like me getting hit."
"Training isn't hard for me. I run 30 or 40 minutes a day and work in the gym an hour and a half; I spar with my dad and hit the bags."
Are you still going to school?
"Yes, I'm in high school [la preparatoria] here in Culiacan."
Will you surpass your father?
"I want to be like him, but I'll work hard and and come what may. I'd like to remain undefeated for as long as possible. We'll find out quickly if I have what it takes. The fans will decide that, even though I believe that I do."
