Cuello's fight and Jr's future...
(34 posts)-
I think these are the fights that Jr needs to get to the top. This fight and the Vanda fight shows you that Jr has the will to go above and beyond but this is not the only thing that you need to win, be a champion and stay as a champion for a long time. Jr has to learn a lot of things still. He gets hit a lot! Margarito has a great chin but remember what happened to him at the Mosley fight. Margo kept getting clubbed over and over until the chin gave up. This might happen to Jr if he fights top, elite fighters at 154 or 160. I think Duddy blows Jr away in less than 7, 8 rnds. If Jr cant KO guys at 154, he is not going to do it a 160! Then again if he is at 147, it might be a different story...we will never know...
Do you guys wanna see Jr fight angulo, kirkland, sergio martinez, williams, top, top guys? He says that he is ready for a big fight...Dont think so...Not yet...PS: how do i change my password?
-
I think Team Chavez has brought Jr so far, but now it might be time to change things up a little. He needs that little extra edge, they gotta bring someone in who can take Jr to that next level. He will never get there with these guys in his corner. From what I saw last night, he wont be able to handle Kirkland, Angulo, Williams, and certainly not a middleweight like Duddy. Hes taken another step back, he should fight someone like Mayorga or something. Whoever he fights next, they gotta do something different in training. After seeing the jab, right cross then left to the body combo over and over again for 10 rounds, it gets kinda old. Thats not working anymore. Uppercuts, combos up stairs, down stairs, right and left hooks to the head, all things that Chavez needs to posses, hes gotta be able to throw these punches if hes gonna have a chance, and learn how to block your damn chin for God Sake. How much longer will it take and how many more unecessary wars like this is he going to have to be in?
-
chavez needs another trainer, I felt so bad seeing julio not having the wind to throw continuosly for more than 30 secs. his punch count is very low, he rocked cuello one or two times, cuello was leaning on the ropes, and jr steped back to get some air, ¿do you think capetillo, for example, could get jr in good shape?
-
No power at 154. Looked slow. Very few jabs and didn't use his height advantage at all. Not a good show.....unless Cuello is really a bad ass and nobody knows it yet.
At one point he had 4 people talking to him in his corner. Why??
I liked following Jr. and liked his style, however, I don't think he's progressing. After Saturday I think I'm done, hopefully he proves otherwise. Throw him in with Duddy, Angulo or some other top guy (Not Kirkland), he's 23 and it's time to see what he's got. Doesn't seem to have the motivation.

Capetillo? Isnt that Margos old trainer? What about Nacho? I wonder when they will pick his next opponent. Its suppose to be a big name...we'll see. And yeah I agree his dad needs to leave him alone lol. Hire a good trainer and let him take care of it
-
yes, Javier Capetillo was/is margos trainer, he is not much of a strategy man, but I think Jr has more power than margo, I think he could have ko'd cuello if he just threw just half as margarito does, youre right Don Nacho could teach him how to box, Vanda and Cuello used a Tight defense that jr doesnt know how to break, the only thing that he comes up with is offer his chin so the other guy throws and leave an open, that worked with ray sanchez, but not with cuello and certainly wont work with a more powerful puncher, Imagine jr fightning a guy like shane mosley? I think loosing a fight could be good for Jr, take a lot of pressure off and realize that he needs better people on his corner.
-
I dont think Capetillo will be able to train again though. Hey this is a different story but did you hear Roach is Margos new trainer? Do you think its true and what do you think about it?
Your right on about the tight defenses, Chavez likes fighting ppl like Sanchez that traid with him and leave themselves open for a left hook counter. I'd like Nacho, better than Mayweather Sr, or Roach or someone like that so there is no language barrier. Remember when Steward trained Chavez Sr for a while? "Ganchow derecho ganchow!" lol

By the way what did you guys think about my article on the fight on the homepage. First one i'd ever written. Did you like it or was it lame? I didnt do the whole round by round thing like I read in most articles, I just wanted to get to my point. You can see the fight on youtube anyways lol. I have to watch it again because I always see new things that I missed the first time.
-
Its a good article, very objective, I like the part where you realize Jr is not his dad, I dindt like the title to it, pretender is a little too much, he is just who he is, we expect more than he is, I think he is good and still has a lot of potential and can do better. centered and realistic article. congratulations.

What was the deal with an huge argument Chavez Sr had with some reporters...slapping, pushing and much more...some asked him questions about the cuello-Jr's fight and Sr exploded with anger!!! anyone knows??? I saw some previews on primer impacto, I thinks...
-
Well the reason to why Julio Sr. aggravated a reporter was because the reporter commented on Jr’s fight by saying, "Un triunfo muy sufrido para tu hijo." Or in English which means: “a triumph very suffered/undergone for your son.” I don’t know why Sr. got so easily raged and went against the first person that asked him about his son’s fight but I think it’s because he knew that Jr. got physically beaten badly. In my opinion Jr. did not fight so well. He wasn’t throwing enough combinations and was an easy aim for Cuello. I did not like the way he fought in this fight though I do think he could have done better.
And by the way Bomber I really like your article. It is very good and not bad at all for it being your first one. I really thought it was one of those articles one can find on a regular basis.lol. Very good one.

creo que jr tiene que tomar la desicion por si solo y agarar otro entrenador
pleased jr call nacho or alguien que no sea tu familia
-
So when will we know who is he going to fight next?
-
I don't know if its just me but I think its cool that Sr protects his son like that you know. He could be siding with the media but instead he takes them on in defense of his son. It may look like hes being over protective and stubborn, and not doing whats right for Jr's career, but I dont think thats the case.
I agree with the poster that said Jr needs to find himself a new trainer, for the sake of his career he should really consider it, I happen to also like Nacho as a candidate.
Thank you for the feedback on my article, I look forward to contributing more soon to this website. No word yet thought on who he will fight next, have any of y'all heard anything?
-
I just saw the video victor, Sr was out of control lol. He even pushed one of his own guys. I bet the reporter thought Chavez was gonna kick his ass, he looked terrified and was saying sorry he just wanted to ask a question. Its a good thing Chavez only pushed him. Hopefully he isnt charged with battery or something, but then again Mexico is run alot differently than the States.

Wasnt there talks of dad's old trainer, Romulo Quirarte, taking over?
-
Yea whatever happened with that? Hijo de su puta madre!!!
-
He really does need a new trainer
-
What pisses me off sometimes is that their problably going to wait for the kid to lose first before they realize what we already see. In the mean time Arum can see dollar signs and has dreams of matching him with Pac to make big bux.
-
why dont you guys send an email to top rank contact@toprank.com...ALL OF YOU! requesting a change, what ever change you guys want on the Chavez team...who knows if they read them but i guess is worth the try...
I sent one already...
-
... what the hell, ill send mine too. :)
-
CainP here...first off why all this hate for the kid...you guys forget Cuello was better than advertised...Cuello comes from the same camp that Sergio Martinez comes from and if he is sparring w Martinez then you better believe this Cuello guy is not some bum...the guy was undefeated...Jr has faced adversity thats all and he has passed w flying colors...yea the kid needs much improvement but he past the test...HE PASSED THE TEST THE ANDY LEE FAILED...MGGIRT JR FAILED...HEARNS JR FAILED...CAMACHO JR FAILED...That test is the one when you step up in competition those guys i named were superstars in the making and all got their butt handed to them when they stepped up...they face adversity and all of them crumbled...JR did not crumble and he did not fold...he is a warrior and he stood in there...he doesnt care if he wins or loses...people knock on him but just cause he is not in there blasting people out like Kirkland a win is a win...stop the hating and start congratulating...he has stepped up the competition each of his last 5 to 6 fights...One thing i definatly think he needs some new trainers who will ride his butt...Margaritos old trainer is a cheat and he is a fraud...we dont need another PLASTERMAN...
-
Cainp your right, studying the fight again Cuello looked strong, maybe stronger than any other Chavez opponent we've seen before. Jr definately showed heart no doubt, he could have boxed circles around Cuello the 2nd half of the fight but he chose to fight the man. Chavez is definately a fighter and Cuello was behind a turtle shell defense, if you noticed, he'd throw a combo then put his gloves right in front of his face again, I think hed be a headache for any 154 lb contender. I just think Chavez needs to improve on defense and add more uppercuts to his arsenal. You see things a second time that you missed watching it the first time, Chavez did throw lots of good combos and mixed it up, he just got hit too much. I dont think we can say he passed his first real test yet though, his first real test is when he fights a top ten 154 pounder IMO. Dont care if its the #10 guy or the #2 guy, he has to beat someone up there.
-
Jr. lost that fight, cuello kept hitting him all night long, chavez didn't cover his face at all when he was trying to hit cuello with hooks to the body that ended up on his elbows, and its not like cuello went down at any point in the fight, so yeah jr. fought bravely but that doesn't make up for the fact that he lost the fight; IMO people verbally attack chavez because of this kind of decisions, if you are going to rob him at least give the guy a draw.
-
Cain, i agree with you. Everybody is so caught up in the fact that Jr didnt knock out Cuello that they automatically open their mouths and start talking their trash. Cuello is exactly what Jr needed as the next step up and he did what he was suppose to do, he won. They dont stop n think , what you pointed out, Cuello came out of the same stable that Martinez is in. Nor the fact that you dont need to ko an opponent to win. Jr. proved that against Cuello. Jr broke through his defense enough to win the fight clearly. He didnt win in a remarkable fashion, but he won clearly. Yes, Cuello hit him, but not ENOUGH to win nor tie. So those people who say it was suppose to be a tie or loss...are thinkin exactly they way i described above, "Jr didnt ko and got hit, its a tie". AND yes he does need some improvement, but he'll learn as he goes along. People are getting anxious because hes the son of a legend but has not won anything yet. Little by little his steppin up and winning. TODO A SU DEBIDO TIEMPO!!! we dont want our future champ to end up like other fighters who were rushed (ie. Vargas). Felicidades Pelon!! Hopefully, they get his dad's ex trainer (like it was rumored), Romulo Quirarte in his corner!!!
-
the fact is that cuello landed a lot more punches than junior did, and since nobody was knocked down, the fight was decided on points and although junior inflicted the most damage with his punches he did lost that fight on points, i dont care if he wins by a ko or not like the last post said, but fair is fair and cuello did not lost a single round by a 10-8 difference so what he did was enough to at least earn a draw, regardless of what chavez jr. fans think. He does need a new trainer, i mean he has all the physical advantages he needs to become a champion, he has long arms he is tall, strong, he has a great chin but the truth is that he has a lot to learn, starting by taking advantage of all those physical attributes by fighting from a distance using his jab, and to stop fighting at close range or at least develop a defense good enough to block punches on the inside.
-
you got a point there, still I think jr won, by a closer margin than judges scored. I also agree that cuello is a tough moth*** I was surprises. Today de la hoya will tell wether he retires or not, Jr's been insisting in fighting Oscar, do yo think oscar is willing to? it'll be lots of money for him if the fight happens.
-
I really dont think Oscar is retiring i doubt he will want people to remember that a little filipino guy closed his carrer for him, and to be honest with you guys I dont think jr will ever be at the same caliber of a fighter that Oscar or his father SR ever where wit that said i will really love to see him fight JR then Forrest i think Oscar is a monster at 154 and the only guy i see that can beat him at that weight right now is maybe Paul Williams, plus after all the boos hes gotten in his last fight appearances i think he shouldnt go out like that he is and deserves better than that
