Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Willy Wise

In Ring Magazine’s 1999 Upset of the Year, Willy Wise (23-6-4, 7 KOs) won a convincing decision over Chavez in what was supposed to be just a tune-up fight.

ALSO ON THE CARD – Ricardo Lopez won the IBF light flyweight title from Will Grigsby with an unanimous decision. Emmett Linton won an unanimous decision over Rafael Pineda. Cruiserweight Antonio Targer won a ninth-round TKO over Mohamed Benguesmia. Christy Martin won a fifth-round TKO over Daniella Somers.

THE OPPONENT – Willy Wise of Westbury, New York, was supposed to be an easy opponent for Chavez. In his thirty-three bouts since he started boxing in 1988, Wise had won only 7 bouts by knockout, and he came into this fight with a three-bout losing streak. His victory in this fight earned him a fight with Shane Mosley a few months later, in which he was stopped in the third round. After losing the rematch with Chavez in 2003, Wise retired with a record of 26-11-4 (7).
