Avenging his loss to Wise four years earlier (Ring Magazine’s 1999 Upset of the Year), Chavez once again met his foe and won the TKO in the second round when a cut opened up over Wise’s left eye.
ALSO ON THE CARD – Young Julio Cesar Chavez Jr won his second pro fight with a first round knockout of Eugene Johnson. Jorge Kahwagi won a second-round TKO over Mario Marciel for the Mexican cruiserweight title. Diego Morales won a technical decision over Evangelio Pérez.
THE OPPONENT – Wise’s surprise victory in his first fight with Chavez earned him a fight with Shane Mosley a few months later, in which he was stopped in the third round. He had a couple more wins, including one for the IBO welterweight title, but had a three-bout losing streak coming into this match just like the first time. After losing this fight, he retired with a record of 26-11-4 (7).
