Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Tommy Small

After taking a good deal of punishment, Small (23-3-0, 13 KOs) took a knee near the end of the third round. In the fourth, Chavez battered Small in the corner until fifty-six seconds in when the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

THE UNDERCARD – Pablo Tiznado won a ten-round decision over Victor Villanueva. Luis Vazquez scored a fifth-round TKO over Larry McCall. Lorenzo Tiznado scored an eighth round TKO over Fernando Beltran. Alejandro Landeros knocked out Ricardo Cervantes in two.

THE OPPONENT – Tommy Small of Beckley, WV, began his pro boxing career in 1986. He had only three losses when he faced Chavez in ‘91–two by decision and one stopped on cuts. However, he had not faced any major opponents. Just two months after his loss to Chavez, Small won the WBF light middleweight title with a decision over Harry Arroyo. A few other notable fights were a decision loss to Raul Marquez in 1993, a decision loss to Meldrick Taylor in 1996 and a sixth-round knockout loss by Hector Camacho in 1998. Small retired after the Camacho fight with a record of 35-17 (22).
