This fight was scheduled as a tune-up for Chavez’s defense of the WBC title against Terrence Alli in May. Rojas of Argentina was announced as having a record of 24-4-1 (8). He came in wearing red trunks with white trim. Chavez was wearing blue with white.
ROUND ONE – Rojas stayed near the center of the ring with Chavez moving around him. Chavez was against the ropes a few times in this round but never for very long. The total number of punches landed for this round was pretty even for both fighters, the majority of the punches being hooks thrown at close range.
ROUND TWO – Again Rojas was staying near the center of the ring, throwing a lot of jabs and crosses. Chavez started with the jab, then worked his way in throwing the hook to the liver whenever he got the chance. This was working on Rojas, as could be seen by his heavier breathing. However, it didn’t quell the agressiveness of Rojas, who continued throwing heavy punches were sometimes successful in moving Chavez.
ROUND THREE – Fighting in close again, Chavez started landing more of his left hooks. Rojas was throwing his right less, opting instead to protect his side with it. However, Chavez had no problem getting past it and continued to throw the left to the liver. A right hand then sent Rojas stumbling backwards to the cheers of the audience, but he then came back in close exchanging and got Chavez against the ropes. The audience erupted with cheers again as Chavez skillfully bobbed and weaved to avoid the punches of Rojas. Exchanging again, Chavez had been backed up halfway across the ring when he landed a left hook to the head which dazed his opponent. He then followed up with lunging jabs and crosses, which his opponent was defenseless against stumbling backwards across the ring. Rojas was finally spared when he got to the ropes and then fell face first onto the canvas. Referee Alejandro Vega started the count, but it was obvious that Rojas would not be able to get back to his feet or even to his knees after taking Chavez’s vicious body attack. Rojas’ corner entered the ring to aid their fallen fighter, but the referee continued counting to give Chavez the knockout win at 2:05 into the round.
UNDERCARD – Jaime “Rocky” Balboa won a third round knockout over Mario Fuentes to retain the Mexican Light Welterweight title.
