Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Miguel Ruiz

This may have been Chavez’s actual first professional loss. The fight ended at the end of the first round when Chavez knocked down Ruiz, who was unable to continue. The referee ruled that the knockout punch had come after the bell, and disqualified Chavez. However, the verdict was overturned the next day as Ramon Felix, Chavez’s manager, was a member of the Culiacán boxing commision. It went down in their books as a first-round knockout.

THE OPPONENT – Miguel Ruiz, also of Mexico, won his first fight on points in 1977 before nine consecutive losses. However, most of these were fights against opponents with good records. Ruiz retired in August of 1981 after suffering a third round TKO by Azumah Nelson.

ALSO ON THE CARD – Adan Chavarria won a ten-round points decision over Jose Luis Soberanes. Juan Ochoa scored a first round knockout over Joel Soto.
