Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Marty Jakubowski II

In the fourth round, Chavez landed a hard right, followed up by a hook to the body and one to the head, and Jakubowski (107-5-0, 30 KOs) fell stiffly to the canvas. Referee Gelasio Perez was waving his hands in the air almost before Jakubowski had even hit the canvas, giving Chavez the TKO win with about thirty seconds left in the round.

ALSO ON THE CARD – Ernesto Zepeda retained his NABA super featherweight title after fighting to a technical draw with Juan Manuel Arellano. Jose Luis Castillo knocked out Cristino Mota in four. Raul Perez knocked out Juan Gutierrez in four. Super bantamweight Ricardo Castillo won a third-round TKO over Ramon Ortiz.

THE OPPONENT – After his first fight with Chavez, Jakubowski built up forty-eight more straight wins (not counting nine No Contests) in the thirty months before meeting his next decent opponent. Those fights could not have prepared him for his title bout against WBC lightweight champ Miguel Angel Gonzalez, in which he lost all but one or two rounds on the scorecards. In 1996, Jakubowski also got a shot at the WBO lightweight title but lost the decision to Artur Grigorian. In a WBA light welterweight title match against Khalid Rahilou the following year, he lost by a seventh-round TKO. After this second loss to Chavez, he had only one more major bout, in which he lost to Dennis Holbaek Pedersen of Denmark by a seventh-round knockout. After being inactive from 2001-2003, Jakubowski returned to boxing last year and has added three more minor wins to his record of 113-7 (33).
