The fight was stopped 1:19 into the fifth round, and Chavez won a technical decision over Bumphus (19-3-0, 6 KOs).
THE OPPONENT – Jeff Bumphus, a southpaw from Elkhart, IN, turned pro in 1984 and built up a record of 19-1 with frequent fights against lesser opponents before facing Greg Haugen in July of 1987. He lost that fight and a fight after that with Vinny Pazienza by unanimous decisions. After the Chavez fight Bumphus also lost fights to notable opponents Terrence Alli (TKO8), Louie Lomeli (decision), Gert Bo Jacobsen (KO4) and Joey Gamache (TKO10). Bumphus retired from boxing in 1993 after the Gamache fight.
THE UNDERCARD – Hector Lopez knocked out Felipe Olivar in two. Juan Antonio López lost a ten round decision to Angel Hernandez. Oscar Bejines won a ten-round decision over Mario Miranda.
