Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Danilo Cabrera

Chavez won an unanimous decision over Cabrera (30-4-0, 25 KOs) to retain his WBC super featherweight title.

THE OPPONENT – Danilo Cabrera, of the Dominican Republic, began his pro boxing career in 1983 and remained undefeated for his first sixteen fights before losing a ten-round decision to Erskine Wade. After winning eight more minor fights, Cabrera got a shot at the WBA featherweight title but lost by a fourteenth-round TKO to Barry McGuigan. He got a shot at the WBC version of the title just a few months later but suffered a tenth-round TKO loss to Azumah Nelson. The following year, though, he got yet another title shot, this time stepping up in weight to try for Chavez’s WBC super featherweight title. After losing this fight, Cabrera would have only two more minor wins and losses to several notable opponents, including a decision to Brian Mitchell and knockout losses to Dingaan Thobela, Juan Martin Coggi, Regilio Tuur, Jean Baptiste Mendy and Jacobin Yoma. He retired from boxing in 1992.

THE UNDERCARD – Willy Salazar retained his Mexican flyweight title with a first-round knockout of Gilberto Sosa. Welterweight Jorge Vaca beat Saoul Mamby in a shutout decision. Lightweight Mario Martinez scored a tenth-round TKO over Jorge Gomez. Middleweight Jesus Gallardo knocked out Marcos Geraldo in two. Light welterweight Rogelio Juarez won an eight-round unanimous decision over Derrick Hudson.
